General Accounting: Taxation Overview

A B.S. in General Accounting with specialization in taxation, will provide you with new ways of thinking, and acute insights into tax preparation, planning and compliance that help businesses and clients stay competitive in a global marketplace.

By pursuing a General Accounting degree with specialization in Taxation, your studies will be focused on tax reporting and regulations for individuals, corporations, and partnerships. You will also expand your knowledge about the business environment and ethical behavior through the application of tax-related principles. 

The B.S. in General Accounting: Taxation program will enable you to sit for the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Examination, but not the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination.  However, additional appropriate coursework can be completed to address the necessary CPA Examination requirements.

Full-time students can complete the 120-credit degree program in four years.

Undergrad accounting programs are offered in the day and evening (and some classes on weekends) at both the Dobbs Ferry and Bronx campuses (with some introductory courses offered in the evening in Manhattan).

It is not necessary. Based on the students area of interest, specialization within the General Accounting degree program allows students to focus on coursework appropriate for Financial Accounting, Taxation or Computer & Information Systems.

Yes, faculty are always ready to help students with questions about what courses to take, the sequencing of courses, and career opportunities, including internships and cooperative education.

General Liberal Arts and Sciences
General Education Requirements: 60 Credits

*ECON 125, ECON 220, ECON 221, ECON 230, MATH 116 and MATH 120/CISC 120 or CISC 131 are Prerequisites for the major and must be used to fulfill general education requirements.

Core and Specialization

Business Administration Core: 27 Credits
General Accounting & Specialization: 24 Credits
Open Electives: 9 Credits

Students who choose the major concentration in General Accounting with a specialization in Taxation must complete:

  • ACCT 121 Intro to Management Accounting
  • ECON 210 Business Presentations and Personal Branding
  • FINC 235 Financial Management
  • INBU 250 International Business
  • BLAW 240 Business Law I
  • MGMT 225 Principles of Management
  • MGMT 340 Organizational Behavior
  • MKTG 220 Principles of Marketing

 

The University鈥檚 15-credit residency requirement in the major of General Accounting with a Specialization in Taxation must be met with 12 credits in Accounting (ACCT) courses numbered 240 or higher, excluding  and  plus  (senior level capstone course).

  • ACCT 240 Intermediate Accounting I
  • ACCT 241 Intermediate Accounting II
  • MGMT 460 Strategic Management (senior-level capstone course)
  • Any one additional Accounting (ACCT) courses except ACCT 380 or ACCT 381, Internship in Accounting I or II.
  • ACCT 340 Intro Federal Income Taxation
  • ACCT 341 Advanced Fed Income Taxation

and one of the following courses

  • FINC 345 Financial Statement Analysis
  • BLAW 340 Business Law II

Any three courses

The major in General Accounting with a Specialization in Taxation meets the educational requirements for candidates applying to take the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Examination. The major in General Accounting with a Specialization in Taxation does not meet the educational requirements for candidates applying to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination.

At the end of this program, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts in the business core curriculum
  • Recognize and evaluate ethical issues in business and accounting
  • Use accounting tools and integrate business and accounting information to make strategic economic and managerial decisions
  • Use oral, written, and presentation skills to communicate accounting information
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tax practice and techniques and the business implication of taxes
